Vielha, the valley capital about 14 km down from the lifts, suits visitors who want a proper town with shops, restaurants and services rather than a ski-in ski-out village; regular ski buses run up to Baqueira through the season.
At its heart is the Romanesque church of Sant Miquéu, home to the celebrated 12th-century wooden Crist de Mijaran, and the Musèu dera Val d'Aran tells the valley's story and its Aranese culture. Vielha is also the gateway through the year-round tunnel, so most visitors pass through it on the way in.
