Where two rivers meet
Arties sits at the confluence of the Garona and Valarties rivers, about 7 km down-valley from Baqueira — a village of stone houses and old churches with a reputation for two things: its natural thermal springs and some of the best eating in the valley.
Two churches and a governor of California
The old Aranese settlement gathers around the Romanesque church of Santa Maria, built in the 11th–12th centuries with a 13th–14th-century bell tower; inside, Renaissance wall paintings culminate in a vivid Last Judgement across the vault. A short walk away, the Gothic church of Sant Joan (late 14th century) no longer holds services — it serves as an exhibition room for the Museum of the Val d'Aran.
The village's other landmark is the 17th-century tower and chapel of the Portolà manor, once home to Gaspar de Portolà — the soldier who led the first European land expedition into California in 1769 and became its first governor. The manor is now the Parador de Arties, a state-run hotel in traditional Aranese style.
The springs and the table
Natural sulphurous springs rise on the edge of the village along the Camí des Banhs and have drawn bathers for generations. Pair a soak with dinner: Arties has one of the densest clusters of well-regarded restaurants in the valley, which is why locals and skiers drive down for an evening here.
How to do it from Baqueira
It's about 7 km, 12 minutes by car on the C-28 between Vielha and Salardú, and the ski buses stop here — an easy evening trip for the baths and dinner. Arties strings together with Salardú, Bagergue and the capital Vielha for a full day of Aranese villages.
