The capital of the Val d'Aran, 14 km down-valley — a proper town of shops and restaurants around the Romanesque Sant Miquéu and the Aran museum.

The capital of the Val d'Aran

Vielha, at 974 m, is the largest town in the Val d'Aran and its services hub — the practical heart of the valley about 14 km down from the Baqueira lifts. It has the shops, restaurants and museum you won't find in the ski villages, gathered around the Romanesque church of Sant Miquéu at its centre.

The church holds the Crist de Mijaran, a striking 12th-century Romanesque carving, and the town's Aran museum (Musèu dera Val d'Aran) is the place to make sense of the valley's distinct Aranese identity and its own language.

How to do it from Baqueira

It's about 14 km down-valley on the C-28 and N-230, roughly 25 minutes by car, and the valley's ski buses run up to the lifts through the season — so you can base yourself in the town and still ski. Vielha sits at the mouth of the road tunnel that keeps the Val d'Aran open all year.

Beyond the town

Vielha pairs naturally with the medieval villages up the valley — Salardú, Arties and Bagergue — for a full day of Aranese stone and Romanesque churches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Vielha a good base for skiing Baqueira?+

Vielha, the valley capital about 14 km down from the lifts, suits visitors who want a proper town with shops, restaurants and services rather than a ski-in ski-out village; regular ski buses run up to Baqueira through the season.

What is there to see in Vielha?+

The Romanesque church of Sant Miquéu and its Crist de Mijaran, the Aran museum (Musèu dera Val d'Aran), and the town's shops and restaurants. Vielha is also the Spanish end of the road tunnel that keeps the valley open year-round.
