Getting Around

Once you're in the valley, the ski buses, the resort lifts and a hire car cover everything — the villages, the lift base and the pistes.

Ski Buses

Free or low-cost ski buses link Vielha, Arties, Salardú and the villages with the Baqueira lift base through the season — the easiest way to get to the snow if you are not driving.

Lifts & Gondolas

On the mountain, the 36 lifts and gondolas move you between the Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua sectors on a single pass — the fastest way around once you have your skis on.

Taxis

A car gives the most freedom for the villages, the valley and day trips. Winter tyres or chains are advised, and a 4x4 is reassuring after heavy snow; there is parking at the Baqueira base and the villages.

Vehicle Rentals

A car is handy for reaching the villages, ranging the valley and day trips to Aigüestortes or over the French border. Rental desks operate at the airports and in Vielha.

International chains at Toulouse, Barcelona & Lleida-Alguaire airports

Economy cars to 4x4s and SUVs (winter tyres/chains advised) · From ~€35–50/day booked ahead; more for 4x4 in winter

Desks in Vielha (Val d'Aran)

Compact and estate cars · Handy for arriving car-free by bus then ranging the valley

Before You Land: Get Connected

Airport Wi-Fi is fine for the first ride, but mobile data matters the moment you step outside -- for ride-hailing apps, offline maps, and checking bus and lift times on the go. A Spain (or France, if you fly into Toulouse) eSIM activated before departure connects automatically when you land.

Getting to Baqueira — FAQ

Toulouse (TLS) in France is often the handiest, about 2.5 hours by car (allow longer in winter conditions); Barcelona (BCN) has the most flights but is 3.5–4 hours; and Lleida-Alguaire (ILD) is closest at ~2–2.5 hours but small and seasonal.

The easiest way is to hire a car and drive up via the year-round Vielha tunnel. There are also buses from Barcelona to Vielha, and seasonal ski transfers from Toulouse and Barcelona; from Vielha, local ski buses run up to the lifts.

It helps, especially for reaching the villages and for day trips, but it isn't essential if you stay at the Baqueira base or in a village on the ski-bus route. Winter tyres or chains are advised, and a 4x4 is reassuring after heavy snow.

Yes — the Vielha tunnel (opened 1948) keeps the valley connected all winter. The higher Bonaigua pass road can close in heavy snow, but the main route via the tunnel stays open.

By car, or on the ski buses that link the villages (Vielha, Arties, Salardú, Baqueira) with the lift base through the season. The resort's own gondolas and lifts move you around the mountain once you're there.
