The Baqueira Beret ski area and the Val d'Aran

About Baqueira

The pistes, the villages and the valley that make Baqueira Beret Spain's premier ski resort — set in the Val d'Aran, high in the Catalan Pyrenees.

What Baqueira Is

Baqueira Beret (Aranese: Vaqueira Beret) is a ski resort in the Val d'Aran, high in the Catalan Pyrenees on the northern, French-facing side of the range. The lift base sits at 1,500 m, with pistes rising to 2,610 m above it, and the resort hotels gathered around the base.

The resort is defined by its 169 km of pistes — more than any other resort in Spain — and by the medieval villages of the valley below, with their own Aranese language and Romanesque churches. In winter it is Spain's smart ski week: reliable snow, big terrain, and excellent food.

Geography

Baqueira lies in the Val d'Aran, the only Atlantic-facing valley in the Spanish Pyrenees, which gives it the snowiest, most reliable conditions in the range. The resort climbs from the 1,500 m base up to 2,610 m, with the hotels gathered at the foot of the lifts.

The valley connects, via the C-28, to Vielha and its Romanesque old town down the valley, and to the medieval villages of Salardú and Arties and the quieter hamlet of Bagergue above them. Beyond it lie the Aigüestortes National Park and, over the border, France.

For ideas beyond the pistes, see our day trips guide, and our sights guide for the villages and mountain sights nearby.

The Ski Area

The ski area is the reason most people come — 169 km of pistes across three linked sectors (Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua) from 1,500 m to 2,610 m, on the snowiest side of the Pyrenees. It is one of the largest ski resorts in Spain, with a long reputation for reliable snow and celebrated off-piste. It is often said to have been the winter base of the Spanish royal family — a link that speaks to its long-standing reputation as Spain's smart resort.

Beret is the gentle, snow-sure home of beginners and cross-country; Baqueira and Bonaigua hold the steeper reds, blacks and the off-piste. Ski buses link the villages to the base. For the food, the villages and the après scene, see our restaurants guide, and for evenings, our nightlife guide.

History & Name

Baqueira and Beret are Aranese place names, and Aranitself means "valley" — the fuller story is in our name-origin guide. Opened in 1964, it grew over the following decades into Spain's leading ski area, as the resort grew from a single 1964 chairlift.

Today Baqueira is firmly Spain's premier ski destination, its identity built around the snow, the villages and the Aranese culture. The deeper history to explore is in the valley below — the medieval villages and their Romanesque churches, an easy trip down the valley.

Climate

Baqueira has a high-mountain climate. Winter brings cold temperatures and reliable snow — its Atlantic-facing position makes it the snowiest resort in the Pyrenees — with the ski season running late November to April. Summer is mild and green, good for walking and cycling.

For season-by-season planning, see our practical info guide and our getting here guide.

Why Choose Baqueira

Skiers often weigh Baqueira against the Alps, or against other Pyrenees resorts. Baqueira's particular strengths are these:

  • Spain's biggest, most snow-sure ski area. 169 km of reliable Pyrenees pistes across three sectors, right above the base.
  • Villages you can walk. The medieval villages — Salardú, Arties, Bagergue — link down the valley, and Vielha the capital, all with their own Aranese character.
  • Great food and a valley with real culture. One of the best ski-resort food scenes anywhere, with the Val d'Aran's village tables and the base après bars a short walk or drive away.
  • A base for the Pyrenees. Aigüestortes National Park and the French border are all within reach — see our day trips guide.
