Baqueira is a fine base for exploring the Val d'Aran — here are the day trips worth building into your stay, with how far each one is and how to get there.
The valley capital & medieval villages
The valley capital Vielha, 14 km down, is a proper town with shops, the Aran museum and the Romanesque Sant Miquéu. String it together with the medieval villages of Salardú, Arties and Bagergue for a day of Aranese stone and Romanesque churches.
Catalonia's only national park
Just over the ridge to the south lies Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici — the only national park in Catalonia, a landscape of glacial lakes and granite peaks. In summer it's reached by trail and 4x4 taxi from the valleys.
The 2,072 m mountain pass
The spectacular hairpin road up to the Port de la Bonaigua at 2,072 m closes off the head of the valley — the sole land route in until the Vielha tunnel opened in 1948. A summer drive or cycle; the ski sector of the same name runs on its slopes in winter.
The French spa town over the border
Over the border via the lower Aran and the Portillon sits Bagnères-de-Luchon, an elegant French spa town — thermal baths, cafés and a change of country for the day, about an hour away.
