The highest inhabited village in the Val d'Aran — steep stone lanes, a Romanesque church, artisan cheese and long views, often named among Spain's most beautiful.

The highest village in the valley

Bagergue is the highest permanently-inhabited village in the Val d'Aran, a tiny huddle of stone and slate on a shelf above Salardú, about 6 km from Baqueira — and repeatedly named among the most beautiful villages in Spain.

A traditional high-mountain farming hamlet that has kept its Aranese character, it's known today for its Romanesque Sant Feliu church, its artisan cheese (formatge) and charcuterie, and the long views down the valley.

How to do it from Baqueira

It's a short drive or bus — about 6 km, 15 minutes — up a side road from Salardú. An hour is enough to wander the lanes and take in the panorama.

Beyond the village

Pick up some of the local cheese, then link Bagergue with Salardú, Arties and the capital Vielha for a full day of Aranese villages and Romanesque churches.
