The capital of the Val d'Aran
Vielha, at 974 m, is the largest town in the Val d'Aran and its services hub — the practical heart of the valley about 14 km down from the Baqueira lifts. It has the shops, restaurants and museum you won't find in the ski villages, gathered around the church of Sant Miquéu at its centre, whose octagonal Gothic tower and dark spire dominate the skyline and are visible from far down the valley.
The church holds the Crist de Mijaran, a striking 12th-century Romanesque carving of Christ — by the same sculptor as the celebrated Christ of Salardú up the valley. Nearby, the Aran museum (Musèu dera Val d'Aran), set in a historic tower-house in the old Cap dera Vila quarter, is the place to make sense of the valley's distinct Aranese identity and its own Occitan language.
How to do it from Baqueira
It's about 14 km down-valley on the C-28 and N-230, roughly 25 minutes by car, and the valley's ski buses run up to the lifts through the season — so you can base yourself in the town and still ski. Vielha sits at the mouth of the road tunnel that keeps the Val d'Aran open all year.
Beyond the town
Vielha pairs naturally with the medieval villages up the valley — Salardú, Arties and Bagergue — for a full day of Aranese stone and Romanesque churches.
