Baqueira Beret is one of the more family-friendly ski resorts in the Pyrenees: wide, gentle beginner terrain, an organised network of children's snow nurseries, and an English-speaking ski school all make it workable with young kids. Here's how the family side of the mountain is set up — nurseries, lessons, the beginner slopes, and what children pay. For the lessons themselves, see our ski schools guide, and for gear, the ski & board rental guide.
Nurseries: SnowCAMP
Baqueira runs an official network of children's snow parks and nurseries called SnowCAMP, spread across the sectors and open daily from about 8:30 to 16:45:
- Baby SnowCamp 1500 in the Baqueira area takes toddlers from three months to three years — a nursery rather than a ski programme.
- The Baqueira 1800, Beret and Bonaigua parks are for children aged three to six, introducing snow through play — snow carousels, magic-carpet conveyor belts and games — before they move on to formal lessons.
It's a genuine advantage of the resort: you can settle a very young child safely while the rest of the family skis, and ease three-to-six-year-olds onto the snow gently.
Ski school for children
Most children are ready to start proper ski lessons around age four, once they can enjoy the sport safely and follow an instructor. Baqueira's ski schools run dedicated kids' classes — typically mornings, around 9:45 to 12:45, over a four- or five-day block Monday to Thursday or Friday — which is the natural next step up from the SnowCAMP parks. Book ahead in peak weeks, and ask about English-speaking instructors when you reserve. See the ski schools guide for the options.
The best terrain for families
The Beret sector is the natural home for children and beginners: wide, sweeping green and blue runs with a gentle, forgiving gradient and a logical progression from magic carpets up to easy chairlifts. It's a sunny, open plateau rather than a steep mountain face, which makes it far less intimidating for first-timers. There are also gentle nursery slopes on the plateau above the Baqueira base, a short gondola ride up. Once children find their feet, the linked ski area gives them room to progress across the Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua sectors on one pass.
What children pay
Baqueira gives young children heavily reduced or free skiing, though the exact policy is worth confirming each season:
- Children aged 6 and under ski free or for a small nominal fee — check the current rate, as it's set season by season.
- Ages 7–12 pay a reduced youth lift-pass rate, well below the adult price.
- The Beret debutant pass (green runs only) is about €16.50 for a child — worth knowing if a young beginner isn't using the whole mountain.
For the full pass breakdown, see the lift pass guide. Children's rental sets are also cheaper than adult gear.
Practical tips for a family trip
- Base yourself for convenience. Staying at or near the lift base or on the ski-bus route saves a lot of hassle carrying gear and tired children.
- Layer up and protect against sun. The plateau is sunny and high (up to 2,610 m), so sunscreen, goggles and warm layers matter.
- Book ahead in peak weeks. Reserve lessons and nursery places for Christmas, the February half-terms and Easter, when demand is highest. See when to ski.
- Keep the first days short. Half-day mornings of lessons plus a play afternoon at SnowCAMP is plenty for young children.
